Today's height off with @nba MVP @stephencurry30 proved inconclusive.
Hahaha.
Haha. Carmel, CA January 10th, 2012.
After losing my wallet this weekend but eating white strawberries, I thought maybe it was a good time to move on from this blog. I'm gonna stop posting here and start from scratch somewhere else--maybe.
A bunch of really cool people follow me, and they can continue to follow me here if they feel like it--we'll see how long I can go without tumblr like I did this weekend, and whether I can refrain from posting at the new spot. While I had this blog I started to miss a lot of fun books and writing opportunities in other places, and I need to stop for now.
I've written elsewhere, but, like this tumblr, it's decidedly mediocre. I'll continue to write about the NBA even though the NBA might not continue next season. I might get some gigs in some other spots (don't hold your breath), but this specific blog has lost its allure when I realized how much of it annoyed and embarrassed me. I won't delete anything, but I'm done.
For now I'll just be somewhere in Brooklyn hoping to get a new library card, and possibly a new driver's license. We'll see if I get around to the license part.
Losing your wallet is a very weird experience. I don't suggest it for anyone.
Thanks to Microhone, William Wallace/Faraday Rage/Tony Stark/The Tesla Torpedo, Renewzitts, Ginapapawawa and anyone else that doesn't know what tumblr is, but read this shit anyway.
Before I post, I wanted to thank everyone for reading, and mention people I've followed and will continue to follow because there are so many outstanding people contributing to Tumblr, (sorry if I miss people--but I'll try to get everyone--and don't hesitate to email if I stupidly missed you. It was not intentional.). I don't know a lot of the people listed below aside from seeing them on my dashboard, but some I was lucky enough to get to know IRL. They are all incredible. Seriously, it was a treat getting to know all of you especially when you consider how opposed to the idea of meeting people from the Internet o used to be.
I'll keep reading most of you, but I'm done adding my crap to the mix--for now at least.
- Soup, obviously, is so good my parents read him now. He also co-created Neighborhoodr with Blakeley.
- Maura is an actual genius, but she would never admit this because she's also incredibly humble, but she knows more about music then everyone I've ever met combined. She's even smarter and more amazing in real life, which is really hard because she's all those things online as well. I hope to read her for the rest of my life.
- Matthew Gallaway wrote a book that's one of the best things I've ever read. He's been a musician and probably a thousand other things, and I have a sneaking suspicion he does all of them well, but it's his writing that's truly humbling when I sit before a blank word document. Buy his book, and don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to give it to everyone you know because it's so fuckin' good. Seriously, I'm surprised I've even been lucky enough to exchange emails with him. Picture exchanging emails with your favorite author; you're not really sure why they're writing back?!
- Dodai is one of my favorite people on the Internet and in real life. She's also an incredible writer and works as hard or harder than anyone else I know.
- B. Dean Skibinski Simply put, he's the best person I've never met.
- Rachel is smarter than me and just about everyone else, but she really wants to get to know everyone, which is a pretty awesome combination. I'm lucky to have met her at Housing Works and I'm sure they're already missing her a lot.
- Kristin is a contributor at NBA Off Season, see below, but she's going to be a writer of note some day, and she's a solid person all around. Can't say enough about her. I hope she puts more stuff for me to read online soon.
The people I used to intern with at Gawker under blakeley and even those who came after the short-lived gawker.tv were all a nice mix to know on tumblr and in real life, and even though the majority of them are younger and cooler then me, they aren't the obnoxious younger people I increasingly see around town. In no particular order:
- Bill Zilla --incredible guy and a good friend. He will probably write and draw a comic that makes him famous at some point in his life. If he feels like it.
- Rosie Gray --precocious writer, and probably someone that will keep getting jobs I want into the next decade, but she's such a nice person it's hard to say anything bad about her except that she's probably more talented then anyone else her age or older.
- Amanda --one of the nicest people I've met in NYC.
- Josh --even though he was actually before me at Gawker (and yet still younger), he's hysterical wherever he is--I think he's on the west coast now.
- Cassie --the sweetest girl you'll ever meet, and she knows almost everything you'd want to know about New York. I'm pretty sure I'll be tagging along with her to parties I have no right to be at forever.
- Danny --great writer, and one of those people who you'll see a lot more of in the future.
- Kristina Lucarelli --gorgeous and vivacious, she's a good reason to go online, and an even better reason to buy her a drink and let her riff on anything.
- Sergio --will probably expose some corruption as a freelance journalist at some point.
- Chris --is more entertaining then he'll ever let you know.
- Vanessa Prat --is simply a joy to know
- Jill --will loan you a book as long as you return it, and she's nice to almost every one she encounters. It's a rare and treasured trait in people you meet here in New York.
- Mike --a friend and he's more talented then you or me.
- Anderson --awesome dude, literary without being a prick about it, and some one should hire him soon to write for them. Also, he blogs here
- Yoni--is remarkably outgoing IRL for someone that's so funny on the Internet as well. He's probably going to be famous one day.
- Kirk --is more charismatic then just about anyone else I've gotten drunk with.
- heyimanna --once called a girl for me because I'd forgotten her name--you don't find people like that very often.
- Zach Mack --is funny without being obnoxious about it.
- Halle --cracks people up
- Whitney--she's an OG intern, and getting drunk with her on the Gawker roof will always be something I look back on fondly. She's also not that tall.
Some other people I've followed and got to know through email etc.
- Matt --funny and a genuinely good guy. You can read him over at Gawker now.
- Hez --is Vancouver hedonism and sexiness at it's best.
- Titivil --Awesome freelance writer for the awl and other places (he calls himself an essayist), and just a good guy all around. He has an entertaining blog that you should follow if you're not an asshole. He will not take kindly to assholes.
- MisterHippity --funny--everyone should follow him if they don't already.
- Julie Klausner --hysterical lady everyone knows.
- Best Roof Talk Ever --'nuff said
- Lauren Rae Bertolini she's very good at Interneting
- To Disheveled Hair --used to go by blue hoodie. Funny west coast guy that listens to good music and eats good food.
- Sam--Great commenter and journalist. Follow him. Met him randomly at one of those Meet-Ups and he knew me from the Internet. It was the first and only time this has happened.
- Chris Mohney --editor and writer. Does parody and satire quite well. I'll probably never meet him, which is a shame.
- Orell --a good "dude."
- Gold-Notebook --One of the rare feminists that doesn't hate me, or think I'm a _______ ________.
- Michelle Dean -- exceptional writer, so I wish she would write more.
- qed --I wish I was friends with her in real life.
- 92y --great place; great tumblr.
- MercuryPDX --fuckin' hysterical, and was always nice enough to offer guidance when I didn't know how the fuck to do something on the Internet (which was often).
- Andrew --probably a better basketball player then me, but we'll find that out soon enough.
- Hired Goons --is a great blog--don't know the person behind it--which is unfortunately the case for a lot of these people.
- Natasha --is scary smart. I'm afraid to email her.
- blackberryvision --She's been posting great photos from her bberry for at least a year, and she's probably my only connection to fashion aside from my twin sister that bought anything I've ever worn that doesn't make me look homeless. Also really nice and self-deprecating.
- Boobs Radley--Might be the funniest woman on the Internet today.
- Ryan --Awesome guy that hired me to intern at NNN before they partnered with YouTube. He's just a good guy all around. I'm lucky I met him.
- Joe --Going to be one of the best blogging journalists ever.
- Topher Chris --basically is tumblr
- Winston Wolfe --Knows so much about sports it's mind blowing, and has the capacity to boil down all the BS you see in the sports world to focus on what makes athletics so inspirational and important to me and many others. Incredible guy. Also check out NBA Off Season, which he is obviously a contributor for. Also SugaShane and many other bloggers from NBA Off Season and other sites (you can see them in the right hand column here). They keep my love for the NBA alive when the league tries so hard to piss me off.
- El Barrio Tours --He takes gorgeous photos around NYC.
- It's the Music People--She's got good taste in poets and she's El Barrio to the fullest. Follow her blog and look for her any time you're in a bookstore.
- Coke Talk --I'm pretty sure I've taken drugs with whomever this is, or if not, I should have.
- Marina is the art editor at Flavorwire and Animal NY, so you should follow her tumblr
- Negevrockcity --has a tumblr that I used as my homepage for a while because it's that packed with interesting tidbits from around the web.
- Steve Huff --formerly of DailyHuff and Occulist, this guy is freakin' hysterical and writes great fiction at Vintage Hell.
- why do I have a blog --Unbelievably funny, and I will always read her simply because she brings humor where others would find pain.
- strictly alright --Liberal Arts major in NYC that listens to good hip hop, and probably reads more than you.
- Jen Doll --Doesn't really like this whole Tumblr thing, which might be why I like her, plus she's hysterical at the Village Voice and on twitter.
- Ally Millar --is the only person that I've written a 2000 word email to and was kind enough to respond.
- Caroline Street --Just a lovely blog all around. I'll always read her.
- Brian Van--funny and informative--has very strong views on arrest procedures.
- Katie Baker --I don't need to say anything about her since everyone knows how talented she is.
- Hunter Walker --He's the best reason to go to journalism school.
- nyc the blog --Shows you what hyper-local can actually accomplish, and larger media outfits should stop stealing from him, or at least hire him.
- The Cajun Boy --Huge, affable guy that couldn't be nicer and the only person you need to talk with if you ever go to New Orleans (even if you end up in jail--which I highly suggest you avoid at all costs). Great writer at Yahoo and elsewhere. Never should have been let go as night editor at Gawker.
- Justin --Super talented guy that can do just about anything with a video camera.
- Will Leitch --I once rode an elevator up to a party with him, and he's one of those people who is nice even though he doesn't need to be. Incredible writer.
- YM --you know them all.
- SOM --yeah sure.

Awl Commentators really are smarter and funnier then you or me. You should follow them, but also the individual tumblrs for the people you see mocking/complimenting hairpin and awl posts. The Awl and Hairpin are two of the best spots on the web, and it's due in large part to the people who comment, which you can't really say for any other sites:

I hope I got everyone, but if I missed you, drop me a line. I might not be blogging here anymore, but I'm reading all of you.
Have a good one.
My sister's Motown earrings made of discarded vinyl.
Tonight in Brooklyn
people sit alone and read to themselves while listening to vinyl from before they were born. Others in a group will sing along to the songs they know and talk during the more obscure tracks. Someone brought a joint and that's passed around. A giggle turns into a laugh and the others lose themselves in silliness. No one has any idea what time it is.
Tonight in Brooklyn
the cocaine sticks, and the razor blades have condensation on them. The dark bars hide excess and the joy of a neat bourbon, but the occasional cigarette smoker briefly breaks the curiosity with wails of an incomprehensible language. The hair on the gypsy girls downstairs naturally falls into Jatayein coils that remind you of your crazy girlfriend from college that lives somewhere on the island. Buildings are dark and the lighted windows hold laughter and loud voices. Somewhere on the island a baby is being created.
Tonight in Brooklyn
everyone looks 20, and smiles a lot when you walk by them. They're hopelessly smitten with their place in life, and can't wait to find out what comes next. I don't have the heart to tell them.
I'm probably going to get this even though I'm broke, and I already have four translations of Illuminations. Rimbaud is just too interesting and talented to pass up.
THERE IS NOTHING MORE COMMON THAN UNSUCCESSFUL PEOPLE WITH TALENT.
Well except successful people without talent who believe they're talented because of the success.
Take a break from relaxation.
I surrounded a can of hash with glowing red embers of a fire this weekend, and I fucked up the first one by over-zealous tong retrieval. Then, I popped up half the top of the second can with my knife, and let it sit in the hallucinatory ember clouds until the hash at the top of the can was sizzling like my vibrating neurotransmitters at the corner of S______ and S______ on a Saturday in the LES.
I figured it was ready, and after repeated warnings the can would burn off from the bottom, I took it off the embers, and let it cool for five minutes. Then I popped the rest of the top off and had a bite.
Mild, at best.
Protip: Throw that shit in a skillet before you put it over the fire. It needs to be spread out to char sufficiently.
